OK.... so I made a friend online that lives up in Concord, a fellow metal head, a totally sweet bear of a gentleman named Adam. He and I get along really well, and have a happily platonic friendship. We are both total geeks so it's fun having someone i can totally geek out with and we're concert buddies now. I haven't been to a concert since late 2004! Until last night!!
We made plans to go see Dream Theater and Opeth in Oakland, at the Paramount. OMG it was awesome!!! the opening bands were 3, who is from Woodstock NY and they were pretty impressive, very talented group of kids, the drummer(s?) were awesome! Best cymbal work I've seen, very cool stuff, they did a cymbal/drum duet things that was too much fun to watch. the other band was Between the Buried and Me... still can't decide if I like them or not. They have an interesting sound, but not great... so i don't know, lol.
Opeth sounded better than they did the last time i saw them. As amazing live as ever. They have a new CD coming out that i am greatly looking forward to after hearing one of the new songs off of it. Should be good and heavy and interesting as all their albums are. The did Wreath and In my Time of Need, 2 of my favorite songs, but was somewhat disappointed they didn't do When, but it was an awesome set anyway.
Dream Theater was great, for the first 3 or 4 songs... then they lapsed into this severely dull slow song that i can't stand that was about 30 minutes into their set and we ended up leaving early, lol. It was good to see them live again too. They are always great but somehow managed to seriously lose their momentum in mid-set this time.
Anyhow that was my lovely Saturday night. Looking forward to more concerts soon. Had to much fun, my ears are still ringing a little bit, but well worth it all in all.
